Laser hair removal is one of the most requested treatments at The Skin Cliniq, and for good reason: done correctly, it offers a lasting reduction in unwanted hair without the daily upkeep of shaving or the discomfort of waxing. But results depend heavily on the technology used and the clinician guiding your treatment. Here is what to expect at every stage, explained in plain terms.

How does laser hair removal actually work?

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle with a focused beam of light. That light energy converts to heat, which disables the follicle’s ability to produce new hair. Because the laser is drawn to pigment, it treats the hair at its root without damaging the surrounding skin when the settings are matched correctly to your skin tone and hair type.

At The Skin Cliniq we perform laser hair removal with our Nouvaderm laser platform. Nouvaderm is a versatile system we use for both skin treatments and hair restoration, and its adjustable settings let us calibrate each pulse to your individual profile rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. Sally reviews your skin tone, hair color, and treatment area before every session so the energy is both effective and comfortable.

Why does laser hair removal require multiple sessions?

Laser hair removal requires a series of sessions because hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only disable a follicle while the hair is in its active growth phase. At any given moment, only a portion of the hair in a treatment area is actively growing, so a single session cannot reach every follicle. Spacing treatments over time allows us to catch each follicle during the window when it responds best.

Most patients need a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart, with the exact number depending on the treatment area, your hair’s density, and its color. Coarse, dark hair on areas like the underarms or lower legs tends to respond efficiently, while finer or lighter hair may need more patience. During your consultation, Sally will outline a realistic schedule so you know what to expect from the start.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most patients describe laser hair removal as a series of quick, warm snaps against the skin rather than true pain. The sensation is brief and passes as the handpiece moves across the area. Sensitivity varies by body region, and areas with thinner skin can feel more intense than others, but the treatment is generally well tolerated without numbing.

Because our philosophy is patient-first, we go at a pace that keeps you comfortable and check in with you throughout the session. If an area is particularly sensitive, we can adjust the approach so you are never simply pushing through discomfort.

How should I prepare for a laser hair removal session?

The most important preparation step is to shave the treatment area a day or two before your appointment, rather than waxing or plucking it. The laser needs an intact follicle beneath the surface to target, so waxing and plucking, which remove the root, actually work against the treatment. Shaving leaves the follicle in place while clearing the surface hair the laser would otherwise singe.

You should also avoid sun exposure and self-tanner in the weeks leading up to your session. Because the laser targets pigment, tanned or recently sun-exposed skin changes how the energy is absorbed and can affect both safety and comfort. Come to your appointment with clean skin free of lotions, deodorant, or makeup on the area being treated.

What can I expect after a treatment?

Immediately after a session, it is normal for the treated area to look slightly pink and feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn, and this typically settles within a few hours to a day. You can return to most daily activities right away. In the days that follow, the treated hairs will often appear to grow before shedding out, which is a normal part of the process rather than regrowth.

Aftercare is straightforward: keep the area clean, apply a gentle moisturizer if it feels dry, and protect it with sunscreen while it recovers. We recommend avoiding intense heat, hot tubs, and vigorous exercise for a day or so, and steering clear of harsh exfoliants on the area until any pinkness has fully resolved.

How long do laser hair removal results last?

Once you complete your full series, laser hair removal offers a long-term reduction in hair, with many patients seeing hair grow back finer, lighter, and far more sparsely. It is most accurate to think of laser hair removal as long-lasting reduction rather than permanent removal, because hormonal changes and dormant follicles can prompt some regrowth over time.

For that reason, occasional maintenance sessions are common once the initial series is complete. These touch-ups are typically quick and infrequent, and they keep the treated area smooth without returning to the constant cycle of shaving or waxing.

Is laser hair removal right for me?

The best way to know whether laser hair removal suits your skin and hair is a consultation, where we assess your treatment goals, skin tone, and hair type in person. Advances in laser technology have widened the range of candidates who can be treated safely, but individual factors still matter, and an honest assessment up front sets the right expectations.

Sally brings more than 25 years of clinical nursing experience to every consultation, which means your treatment plan is grounded in a genuine understanding of skin, safety, and results. If laser hair removal is a good fit, we will curate a plan tailored to your goals; if another approach would serve you better, we will tell you that too.
