Below is each stage of a lip filler treatment, from the first consultation to the two-week follow-up, and what it looks and feels like.

What is lip filler, and what does it actually do?

Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid gel placed into the lips to add volume, restore shape, and sharpen definition. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body already makes, and it holds water, which is why treated lips look fuller and smoother. The goal is enhancement over alteration. A good lip treatment should look like your own lips on a well-rested day: a clearer border, a little more balance between the upper and lower lip, and softer vertical lines. Lip filler and neuromodulators such as Dysport or Jeuveau treat different problems. Neuromodulators relax the muscles that create expression lines. Filler adds volume where it has been lost or was never there. Some patients use both.

What happens at a lip filler consultation?

Every lip filler treatment starts with a consultation, and first-time filler patients may benefit from scheduling that consultation as its own visit before the treatment day. The extra visit gives you time to think about the plan without feeling rushed.

How long does a lip filler appointment take?

Most filler appointments at The Skin Cliniq take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how many areas are being treated. A lips-only visit sits toward the shorter end of that range.

Lip treatments include topical numbing, which is applied first and given time to work before any injections begin. Lips are the only filler area treated with topical numbing at the clinic. Sally maps the placement before she starts, then works in small amounts, checking shape and symmetry as she goes rather than placing everything at once.

How long does lip filler swelling last?

Lip swelling usually lasts several days to a week. Volume is visible the moment you leave the chair, but the first few days include extra fullness from swelling on top of the filler itself. Lips swell more than cheeks or other areas, so expect them to look larger than your final result at first.

A rough timeline for most patients:

• Day of treatment: immediate volume, with some tenderness and swelling beginning.
• Days 1 to 3: swelling is usually at its most noticeable. Lips can feel firm and look uneven while tissue settles.
• Days 4 to 7: swelling fades and the shape starts to look like what Sally placed.
• Weeks 1 to 2: the filler integrates and the final result becomes visible.

Some unevenness in the first few days is common, because swelling rarely fades at the same pace on both sides. Wait for the follow-up before judging the result. Sally will review aftercare instructions with you at the end of your appointment.

When do you see the final lip filler result?

Final lip filler results are typically visible within one to two weeks. That is why every new filler patient at The Skin Cliniq returns for a follow-up at two weeks. At that visit, swelling is gone, the filler has settled, and Sally can assess the true result with you. If a small refinement would improve balance, this is when it happens.

Established patients who have had filler with Sally before are seen for follow-up as needed.

How long does lip filler last?

Hyaluronic acid filler lasts 9 to 18 months depending on the treatment area and how your body metabolizes the product. Lips tend to sit at the shorter end of that range. Areas with more movement break filler down faster, and your lips move every time you talk, eat, or smile. Cheeks and midface, which move less, usually hold longer.

Many patients maintain their lips with a smaller touch-up once the volume begins to soften, rather than waiting until it is fully gone and starting over.

Can lip filler be reversed if you do not like it?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. If you are ever unhappy with a result, or a complication arises, the filler can be broken down quickly. Reversibility is one of the main reasons hyaluronic acid is the standard for lips, and it lets first-time patients start conservatively and build from there.

When should you book lip filler before the holidays?

Book lip filler at least two to three weeks before any event where you want your lips at their final result. Does cold weather affect lip filler?

Cold, dry Ohio air does not change the filler itself, but it does change the surface of your lips.
